Safari

A better web browser.

Safari is Apple's new web browser thats super fast and has some nice features which will convience you to abandon Internet Explorior for good (really). In this guide I will show you how to enable such features as blocking pop-ups and tabbed browsing. People who are using 10.3 will have Safari installed on their computers, but people with 10.2 will need to download it off Apple's webpage (for free) or use Software Update.

Blocking Pop-ups

Pop-up windows make web browsing a pain in the rear, but Safari is smart enough to block them for you. To do this simply open up Safari which is probably in your Applications folder on your Hard Drive. When the program is open go up to Safari and down to Block Pop-Up Windows. Thats it, no more annoying windows!

Enable Tabbed Browsing

Tabs is a feature that turns five or six open webpages into one window, which makes multi-tasking much easier. Think of it like a fileing cabinet full of files, except they're webpages that you can move between quickly. This is great when you're doing research and have five or six pages open at once. The example below shows some of my favorite web-comics opened in tabs. Each tab is its own webpage, but its contained in a single window. Give it a try, and you'll fall in love.

To enable Tabs you'll need to go to the pulldown menue Safari and down to Preferences (next to where the block pop-up option is). Inside click on the option for Tabs. Now check the box that says Enable Tabbed Browing and also the Always show tab bar. If you'd like to enable the option to Select new tabs as they are created, go for it. This brings the new tab to the front when you create it. I don't prefer that option, but some people do.

While you're in Preferences look around at the other options. You can change your default homepage to anything you'd like (maybe to the GACMug homepage or your college page), change the way book marks are set up, and the default fonts.

By default if you only have one page open you'll see a single tab. To make another Tab just go up to File and down to New Tab. Thats its. Now you have a second tab. You can do this as many times as you'd like. If theres a link you'd like to open in a new tab you can either right click on it (if you have a two button mouse) or hold down the control button on your keyboard and click and hold down on the link. The option to Open in new Tab will show up. Simple and easy!

Bookmarks

If you have a ton of bookmarks in Internet Explorior, don't worry, Safari sees all of them by default. Bookmarks can be accessed by clicking on little book in the top left corner of the Safari window. From there it turn your current window (or tab) into your bookmark library. By default there are a bunch of free bookmarks, delete them if you so wish. There should be a bookmarks folder called Imported IE Bookmarks, in which all of your Internet Explorior bookmarks can be found. Move them over into the other folder, or do what ever you wish to them. To create a new Bookmark folder just click on the metal + button in the lower left of the screen.

At the top left of your Bookmarks folder list is a metal looking folder called Bookmarks Bar. This controls what bookmarks you have along the top of your screen. Any bookmark you put in that folder will appear on that bar. Now heres a cool feature, if you make a folder full of bookmarks and place it in the Bookmarks Bar folder, you can have full access to all those bookmarks in the bar. Quick and easy access to a group of bookmarks. If you have tabs enabled you can chose the Open in Tab option which opens up every link you have listed in that folder in their own seperate tab. For me, I just click once and all 9 of my webpage open at once for me. You could go crazy like some people I know and have 50 links open at once, but than again, to each their own.

Lastly if you're at a webpage to which you wish to make a bookmark out of, just click on the little + button at the top of the window, or go to menue Bookmarks and down to Add Bookmarks.

Built in Google Search

You can search google.com from any browser window. In the top left of your browser window is a small area to enter text, and conviently it says Google right in there. just type in what you wish to seach for and it will search google for you.

Thats how Safari works. Play around with it and use it. Microsoft stoped work on Internet Explorior for Macintosh so we'll have no more updates, and quite frankly Safari is worlds faster and cooler.
