Self - introduction Speaking and listening practice:

Each student receives 3-4 meishi cards. This is an interview style activity. First, 2 students introduce themselves to each other. Then, they play janken and the winner gets to take the loser's meishi card. The goal is to win as many meishi cards as you can. Have the them do the activities in pairs but keep the students seated down instead of standing up.

Who is he/she? Listening practice:
pictures of famous people, cartoons, etc.
In this activity, the teacher first divides the students into teams, two or three teams is best. Then, the teacher describes the famous people using simple phrases. If a student guesses the identity of the picture, his/her team gets a point. This activity can also be done in pairs or in groups, so that students come up to the teacher and take a picture and describe it to their group or to their partner. This method should only be used if the students' level is a bit higher.
Past Writing practice:
Team race worksheet
This is a group activity. Each group competes in a race. Each group has the "Team race worksheet." In the group, one student writes down the past form of one verb and then passes the paper to another student. Then, that student writes down the another verb in the past tense...and this pattern continues until all the verbs are completed in one box. The first group to finish wins that round. You continue this until all the verbs on the worksheet are done. For low level students, it is recommended to review and write the past forms on the board. The first few rounds of the race should be done with the verbs on the board. After that, you can erase the verbs if it gets too easy.
You can award extra points if they choose one verb and make a sentence with that verb.

Each student has a gamesheet. Then, the teacher gives directions and the students have to follow along on their gamesheet. This can be done at varying levels of speed and difficulty. It targets listening comprehension only but encourages participation because of its style. These are exmaples of worksheets where the students can work in groups, or it can be used in smaller classes. In these worksheets, the students can also practice giving directions for others to follow.

This activity is slightly advanced. It is done in pairs. Each student has a worksheet. The object is to try and complete the missing half of the worksheet by answering your partners questions. To start, the pair of students does janken and the loser asks the winner a question. after 1-2 minutes, the pairs should change so each student can work with different partners.. For this activity changing the pairs after every few minutes enhances the activity, but keeping the same pairs also works well.

Speaking, listening, and writing practice: questionnaire
This activity is a group activity. Each student in the group has a questionnaire. Then each student takes turns and asks the other members of the group one question. While each member asks a question, everybody in the group must keep a tally on his/her own worksheet. At the end when all the groups are finished, the teacher can tally all the groups' answers together to show the results of the questionnaire. This can be done as a class instead of groups if the class size is small enough.

The students work in groups. The students do the crossword using their textbooks for help. There are two kinds of hints on the crossword: written and oral hints. For the oral hints, the teacher reads the hints to the students...the students must listen to the hint and guess the word from what the teacher says. This can be done in groups, pairs, or individually depending on the size of the class.

For advanced students, this sugoroku game can be played in groups. each group should have 2-3 teams of 2 people. The goal of this activity is for the students to review textbook material and make sentences and questions. the team with the most points wins.Each student must have a scorecard to write down their sentences and points. The teacher walks around the room and awards points upon checking their answer sheets. Oral questions can also be incorporated into this activity. The teachers can also have the students read their answers to practice their reading.
